When you were a kid in school, do you remember acting out the Thanksgiving story? Or building a “real” volcano?
The CETA – Changing Education Through the Arts program enhances children’s education.
Of course you remember, because you had a chance to live them, rather than simply read (or be told) about them. That’s the power of multi-sensorial learning strategies.
Thankfully, the well-known Kennedy Center, based in Washington, D.C., offers an in-depth program to incorporate multi-sensorial learning strategies into schools. Their program is called Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA)
What is Changing Education Through the Arts – CETA?
You can best see CETA in action in this very cool video, shot at Abingdon Elementary School in Arlington County (Arlington is adjacent to Fairfax County):
To be a CETA school, there are many requirements, for example:
- Educators attend ongoing professional development courses and workshops,
- Principals commit to a multi-year arts-infused curriculum,
- Educators and Teaching Artists collaborate through the year to provide the best experience for the kids.
Obviously, it’s a big deal to commit to be a CETA school, so you can count on those schools really believing in this model. Let’s see which elementary schools in Fairfax County are CETA Schools:
Which Fairfax County Schools are CETA schools (2012-2013)?
- Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences
- Canterbury Woods Elementary School
- Centreville Elementary School
- Fort Hunt Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences
- Graham Road Elementary School
- Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences
- Lake Anne Elementary School
- Mosby Woods Elementary School
- Woodburn Elementary School for the Fine and Communicative Arts
Who can attend a CETA school?
The sure-fire way for a K-6 student to attend any of these schools is to live within their attendance boundary.
However, two of these schools are considered Magnet schools, and as such, they attract students from surrounding areas in addition to serving the children who live within their boundaries.
These Magnet schools are Bailey’s ES and Hunters Woods ES. For these magnet schools, it is possible to apply to attend their program from outside their boundaries. To apply, Students must submit an application in January for the next school year, then, the school district holds a random, computerized lottery. The results from the lottery are released in early April.
