Why you can’t use Fairfax County Zip Codes to find a home by school

Using one of the Fairfax County Zip Codes to find a home by school is like using a plumbing plan to find the electrical main on a house.

Fairfax County Zip Codes are like an architectural plan

When an architect draws plans for a house, there is a specific plan for the plumbing installation, and a different plan for the electric installation.

If we were to put these different plan drawings on top of each other, it’s possible that the electric and plumbing installation share certain paths throughout the home, say, along the same wall. But most likely, each of these installations have enough differences that they each require a drawing of their own.

Just like when building a home, when setting up the infrastructure of a county, there are different plans for dividing the area

  • Fairfax County Zip Codes are one plan – used mostly by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to determine mail routes.
  • Fairfax County School Boundaries are another plan – determined by the School District to assign homes to schools.

And rarely do these two plans match when placed on top of each other on a map.

For example:

Why you should choose a High School Boundary first

To understand High School boundaries and their relationship with the middle and elementary schools, let’s start by defining the concept of School Pyramids, as they are used in the Fairfax County Public Schools district.

What are School Pyramids?

Fairfax County School PyramidsSchool Pyramids are a way to group schools for administrative purposes.

Most School Pyramids in Fairfax County have one High School, one Middle School, and about six Elementary Schools.  These eight or nine schools all belong to the same School Pyramid.

For example, let’s look at the Oakton Pyramid and the schools that comprise it:

  1. Oakton HS
  2. Carson MS
  3. Crossfield ES
  4. Fox Mill ES
  5. Mosby Woods ES
  6. Navy ES
  7. Oakton ES
  8. Waples Mill ES

How are School Pyramids different from School Boundaries?

In practice, School Pyramids do not translate directly into School Boundaries. Continue Reading…

Emily and Sasha are looking for the Top Fairfax County Elementary Schools

Sylvia and Marcus’s have two kids: Emily and Sasha (rising 6th and 7th graders, respectively).

Emily and Sasha need great Elementary and Middle Schools

As part of their new home purchase, Sylvia and Marcus are looking to find highly-ranked Fairfax County Elementary Schools, as well as great Middle Schools for each of their kids.

And, since they’re planning on staying in Fairfax County for several years, they want to make sure that the High School is also very strong academically.

Best High Schools Ranking

Best High Schools Rankings

Together, they analyzed over 21,000 public high-schools in 49 states and D.C.*.

How did US News come up with their ranking of Best High Schools?

This year, their ranking methodology was to:

1. Identify the schools that had above-average test results for reading and math (in standardized tests).

2. Next, they considered the results of the least-advantaged students in those schools and ensured that their test results were above their State average as well.

3. Lastly, the schools that made it through the first two steps were judged based on their “College Readiness Index (CRI)”, calculated by using Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB)** test scores of the 2010-2011 academic year.
